Please click here too comment.

So a little about whats going on here, basically this is a project that I'm doing in an ICT literacy course for a preparatory program at the University of Adelaide.
I've been asked to use a number of programs that I am unfamiliar with to create an electronic portfolio.
So I have decided to start a basic blog to discuss the results of a survey that I have created.

Please watch this short video: (at least the first 5 mins)

Click below to take part in the survey before you comment in the blog please.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for taking time out of you day to assist my assignment. I would just like to ask that if you don't have anything constructive to say please don't bother. criticism is fine but nothing bitchy lol xD.

Feel free to ask any questions you have.

Thank you again

  1. It is the missing link in gaming evolution! It would be a huge competition within both the PC and the console realms because it brings both of those worlds together. I would pay for this innovative idea and I know many others would too!

  2. thanx for commenting Terra.. I think its going to rock the boat a bit in both sides of the industry. Especially because its base model is going to be cheaper then the Xbox one on it release and just as powerful as far as I know.

  3. I think personally it will be a non event to the gaming industry.

I'm 32 been gaming since my parents bought home a Commodore 64 when I was 3 and have for most of my life been on the PC side of gaming. I played Quake instead of Golden Eye, Commander Keen instead of Mario Brothers and Baldur's Gate instead of Final Fantasy.

I see the steambox as a product without a market and a confusing product for stores to sell. PC gamers are not looking for a simplified platform and Console gamers are not looking for a more complex platform (at least they wont be once they experience the minefield that is PC gaming).

If I walking into JB hiFi where do you expect to see these steamboxes on display? Remembering its an open platform which any OEM can produce a product and put a SteamBox sticker on Here is how I think it will play out for most people. Johnny Console comes in and wants to look at the Steamboxes and join the Master Race he has heard so much about. He looks in the gaming section and finds nothing and the selection of PC games on the shelf consists of World of Warcraft expansions and Sims 3 packages. Hes confused already so he asks a sales assistent who tells him he will need to look with the computer hardware, "makes sense" thinks Johnny but he is now questioning his decision already that selection of games looked a bit shit.

So Johnny talks to the sales assistant in the PC hardware section and is presented the 3 different brands and the 4 different types for each brands steamboxes JB HiFi stock, they range in price from $600 to $2000. Overwhelmed he asks the sales assistant, "Whats the differences?" the sales assistant trys to explaine to him that the $600 Dell steambox will play most things on Low, some on High but nothing on Ultra and the $2000 Alienware box will play almost everything on ultra without issue. This worries Johnny his budget is only $700 and was hoping to buy a game with his new console too, and dosn't want a sub par experience. Johnny asks vs a console whats Low, High Ultra? the sales person explains as best he can that not every game is the same and these settings are not a Standard access all games but High is normally on par with console quality resolutions and quality but not always.

Johnny thinks he will grab the $600 Dell Steambox, and asks the sales assistant Where are all the games? he would like to pickup Watch_Dogs and look at what is exclusive to PC. The sales assistant points Johnny to the lack luster PC gaming section he started in and lets johnny know any games can be found in the Gaming section of the store, The sales assistant knows the games can be found online also but has been instructed not to mention this to customers by management and to instead move product they have in store. Confused by the abysmal selection of games on display and the assault of system specs and brands and ranges, Johnny gives up and buys a WiiU with 2 free games and Mario Kart 8 instead.

    1. Thank you so much for you input.. its very appreciated and I'm glad to have someone with your gaming experience posting on my blog :).
Unfortunately I think you have a very valid point, my hope for the SteamBox is that it will bring the flexibility of PC/Steam gaming to the console world. What I mean buy this is the promotion and support of Indi developers, Indi modding and DLC. I think its something that the console world is seriously lacking and I also believe its being intentionally blocked buy Sony and Microsoft. The truth is that this isn't going to happen unless Steam/Linux starts promoting this console to its target audience (whom ever that may be). Again thank you for your post.

  4. Soo... Steam console..

Good points - Um.. everything!!! but realistically, although you'd be spending a lot more then buying a traditional xbox, playstation or wii. The steam box has it all, PC, xbox, wii, playstation all rolled into one. Think about this logically. Brand new Xbox One $600, Playstation 4 $550, Wii U $428.. PC $1500+ for something decent to run games on high-ultra settings effortlessly. I would gladly spend the $2000 on the steam box and not bother about the others.

Bad Point - the steam box could very easily go the way of the Doloreans, just a blimp in techonology history. A legend that was so easily forgotten. (I do realise their was more to the Dolorean's going extinct, its a metaphor people)
